ITHACA, N.Y. -- The second ranked softball (31-3) team posted a 4-0 shutout win over Division I Cornell (25-22). Sophomore Jessica Stangarone (Brewster/Brewster) was four-for-six on the day for the Bombers, who outhit the Division I Big Red in both games and hit a home run in each. The Bombers 4-2 loss in game one ended Ithaca's school record winning streak at 18 games.
In game two, Ithaca jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as junior Hannah Shalett (Shepaug Valley/Bridgewater, Conn.) tripled to score senior Stacey Bartels (Skyview/Vancouver, Wash.) and then scored as sophomore Stacy Pelesz (Hudson/Livingston) reached on a fielder's choice. Pelesz made it a 4-0 game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to left field, her third of the season. Sophomore Carly Myers (Claremont Secondary/Victoria, B.C.) scattered six hits with two strikeouts in recording her sixth complete-game shutout of the season.
In game one, sophomore Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland, Ore.) held Cornell to just one hit over the final six innings. Ithaca got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when junior Jenn Marro (Bethlehem Central/Delmar) hit a two-run homer, the first of her collegiate career, to left-center field and pull the Bombers within two. Ithaca put runners at second and third in the seventh.
Ithaca's win was its first over the Big Red since a 5-1 victory back on April 28, 1998 at Cornell. The last time the Bombers shut out the Big Red was back on May 3, 1996. Nicki Swan tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts in game one as Ithaca swept the doubleheader by scores of 6-0 and 10-3.
The Bombers will close out their regular season on Saturday, April 29, when they host a doubleheader against Buffalo State at Kostrinsky Field at 1 p.m. Ithaca will recognize the 10th anniversary of the 1996 team -- the school's first to reach the World Series -- as well.
